The Recent Developments in Hong Kong Dragon Boating

In 1976, the first Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival - International Races were held at the Shau Kei Wan Typhoon Shelter. Besides nine team of local fishermen, a team of Japanese fishermen from Nagasaki was invited to take part in the races.

In 1978, for the first time, the races were held at the Tsim Sha Tsui East Waterfront.

The races celebrated their 10th Anniversary in 1985. For the first time, the events spanned over one and a half days. The women's International Championship was also introduced in the same year.

In 1995, the Mixed International Championship was introduced

In 1996, the International Races were held on the Shing Mun River in Shatin. The second Asian Dragon Boat Championship was held concurrently with the Races.

In 1997, the second World Dragon Boat Championships was held concurrently with the International Dragon Boat Races. Over 130 teams, including 36 overseas teams from 13 countries participated in the races.

In 1998, the first International Dragon Boat Races held since Hong Kong became a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. A new race format was introduced to the Men's International Championship: all local and overseas men's teams had to participate in qualifying races in order to compete in the Championship and for the Hong Kong Championship.

In 2000, the races were renamed as the Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races and for the first time were organized by the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Association in conjunction with the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

In 2002, the event has been chosen as one of the celebration activities for the 5th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and for the first time, being held at Central Wanchai Waterfront.

In 2003/04, the Association had to cancel the Races in Year 2003 due to SARs outbreak in Hong Kong. The Association is pleased to hold the Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races 2004 again at the Shing Mun River, Shatin.

In 2005, The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Association is announced to host the event back to TST East, Kowloon.
